Overview
About Prison Island (Changuu Island)
Prison Island, also known as Changuu Island, is one of Zanzibar’s most famous historical and natural attractions, located just a short boat ride from Stone Town. The island got its name from a 19th-century project to build a prison for offenders, though it was never actually used for that purpose. Instead, the prison complex was later converted into a quarantine station for contagious diseases.
Today, Prison Island offers a unique blend of history, wildlife, and relaxation. Visitors can explore the old prison ruins, learn about the island’s fascinating past, and enjoy encounters with the giant Aldabra tortoises—some of which are over 100 years old.
The island is also surrounded by crystal-clear waters and vibrant coral reefs, making it an excellent spot for snorkeling, swimming, and enjoying a peaceful beach escape.
